Jim Earl, one of the guys that keeps everything running around here at the GRM South-Side location, came into the Development Department office one morning this week to check a few maintenance things. As he did so, he greeted Claudia and me, “Happy Tuesday.” We of course replied in that droning still-feels-like-Monday tone, “Happy Tuesday.”
Then he asked us, “Ladies, do you know why it’s a happy Tuesday?” Neither of us knew, but this did garner some attention.
“Well, he said, Lamentations 3:22 and 23 says, “It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is Thy faithfulness.” “You see,” he continued, “His mercies are new every morning. All of yesterday’s problems are in the past, but today, it’s all brand new. We get a fresh start every morning so everyday is a happy day. Happy Tuesday.” And just like that he went on about the rest of his day.
There was no pomp and circumstance in the way he said it. It was just polite and calm with a spirit of humility, but there was such hope and joy in just that one simple notion, that everyday is happy because of how great our God is. God is not mad at us, He loves us, and that makes it a pretty great day indeed.
Other Translations of Lamentations 3:22&23
The Lord's unfailing love and mercy still continue, Fresh as the morning, as sure as the sunrise.
His compassion never ends. It is only the Lord’s mercies that have kept us from complete destruction. Great is His faithfulness; His loving-kindness begins afresh each day.
It is because of the Lord’s mercy and loving-kindness that we are not consumed, because His [tender] compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great and abundant is Your stability and faithfulness.
