Laura’s life was spiraling out of control and she had no where else to go. She had recently gone through a divorce that had left her bankrupt both spiritually, emotionally and financially. Life was unstable, moving from job to job and house to house. Laura was using alcohol as a way to deal with her pain and unstable life, but it reached a critical point in her health in June of 2012. She had to call 911 to get to a hospital and she was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. Laura had to make some changes. Laura came to Gospel Rescue Mission and it changed her life.
"The things I believed about life were simply not true."
"I came to the Gospel Rescue Mission in October 2004 only expecting to stay for a few days. I had been sober for a little over a year and working as a maintenance supervisor at some apartments here in Tucson. My roommate relapsed on crack cocaine and my boss and my co-workers were all actively using. I eventually relapsed one night and the next day I decided that I needed to do something different.
I had been struggling with addiction for more than 20 years and had never been able to string together more than 90 days of sobriety. As a result, I had a history of legal issues, had alienated a majority of my family and friends, and had experienced periods of homelessness.
In September 2004, I decided to quit my job; even though it meant I would also lose the apartment that I was living in since my job included housing. I did not want to be homeless again, but I was afraid of returning to active addiction. I remember praying to God to give me the courage to trust Him even though I didn’t know where I was going or what I would do.
Rachel has lost a lot of things in her life. Lost her dad in a car accident when she was three years old and custody of her son due to her drug addiction, but today Rachel can celebrate losing something..92 pounds! Rachel has a new lease on life and her weight loss is only one indication of how far she has come in her recovery. Rachel now has a relationship with God where as she learned to believe in him and believe in herself.
Through the Genesis Program (part of the GRM Life Restoration Program), Rachel was able to see what her false beliefs were. She used to believe the lies that brought her down, ones that told her she couldn’t do anything, but now she is learning to say, “I can!” She has learned to love herself and deal with life instead of depending on drugs to get her through.
Acquiring a Bachelor’s degree is no small task for anyone, but for Frank Montano, becoming a recent college graduate is bittersweet. During some of the darkest and most troublesome years of his life, he managed to stay on top of his schoolwork and become a true success.
Frank’s story is intriguing, inspiring and showcases the amazing work God does in a person’s life. In just four short months, he and all those who know him have seen a drastic change in his character, temperament and lifestyle.
"My name is Vernon and on March 26, 2012, I was arrested for possession of crack cocaine with intent to sell and use. While waiting for arraignment, I cried out to God and He answered me by allowing me to be released and placed on a pre-trial release. At that time, I entered the Gospel Rescue Mission trying to hide out from the people I owed money to.
While at GRM, I started to pray that God would get me out of this once again, but for the first time I cried out to Him with all my heart, spirit and soul. He was faithful to answer my plea once more. As I was waiting on my court date, I asked about entering the Life Foundation Restoration Program and was accepted (not knowing if I would be able to even start or finish it). But for the first time in a long time, I started to trust that God would take care of everything.
I was truly sick and tired of the life I was living. I had been using drugs to escape and for the first time in a long time, I found peace and rest. GRM was a place where I fitted right in and could be myself, where I didn’t have to wear the many masks that I had developed all my life.
All testimonies are either written by or are from interviews with men and women who's lives were transformed during their time at Gospel Rescue Mission.
