“I kept it hidden as best I could from my family. But methamphetamine makes you crazy. I would constantly instigate fights with my boyfriend, everything was broken in our house. I was out of control.”
But although Rosanna’s family didn’t see it, God knew that Rosanna needed help.
“One night after a pretty nasty fight with my boyfriend, I had a moment of clarity where I could see what I was doing to my family… to my three-year-old son and to myself. I knew then that I had to leave.”
Rosanna left to protect the family that she loved, but soon found that it was too hard to stay away. Confessing to everything and promising that she would put the drugs away once and for all, she came back home after 4 months. Without proper treatment and support, Rosanna was doomed to break that promise. Two weeks later, she was back to getting high in secret. That’s when a knock on the door changed everything.
“It was the Department of Child Safety (DCS). They asked me if I was using… I was holding my son at the time and I was afraid that if I told the truth he would be ripped away from me right then and there, so I lied. Then they asked me for a hair follicle test to prove that I was clean, promising that if they found traces of methamphetamine that they would take my son. All my life, drugs had been my ruler, my king, my everything – but it couldn’t protect me from the absolute terror I experienced in that moment. These people were going to take my son… and it was my fault.”
Desperate, Rosanna looked for any help she could find. She reached out to a local substance abuse support group and told them what had happened. Fortunately, one of the leaders took her aside and gave her the exact advice she needed. It turned out that the group leader was a former graduate of the Gospel Rescue Mission and pointed Rosanna there for help.
After telling her family about her plans, she enrolled herself in our women’s recovery program where she finally found the help and support she needed.
“I was scared at first, but they welcomed me in. They helped me pick up the pieces of my life and develop a relationship with Jesus Christ.”
But her business with DCS wasn’t over. A few weeks later came the call that Rosanna was dreading.
“DCS called to inform me that they had found a moderate level of cocaine in my hair and, because of their findings, they were arranging to take my son away. But when the representative learned that I was at the Gospel Rescue Mission, suddenly her tone changed. I confessed that I lied to DCS, that I knew what the test would show and that’s why I came to Gospel Rescue Mission to get help.”
It was a conversation that the DCS representative wasn’t expecting. After discussing it with her supervisor, the representative called back to give Rosanna some amazing news.
“She told me that because I was already in the program and getting the help I needed, plus, I wasn’t at home with my son, that I had already fought half the battle for them. They made the decision to leave my son at home with his father! I can’t describe the relief I felt at that moment. God works miracles!”
With the support of our counselors and staff, Rosanna has found the sobriety she had been trying to achieve on her own for a long time. Even better, DCS has been so impressed with her progress that they have officially closed her case!
“God planned it all. If I hadn’t been so scared, I don’t think I would have come this far. I would have chickened out like I always did in the past. Now I’m truly free from addiction for the first time since I was little. My son gets to stay with me here periodically and I’ve gained a sense of self-confidence that I didn’t have before. Thanks to this place, I’m a new person. I can honestly say I’ve lived two lives – and I never want to go back to that old one.”
No matter what we try to hide, even if we are successful in hiding it from the people closest to us, God knows our hearts. Fortunately, He also knows exactly what we need to find the transformation our hearts desperately need.
