Finding Refuge, Faith, and a New Mission

William
Recovery Guest
William understood the importance of hard work and responsibility from a young age.
Growing up, he witnessed his parent’s struggles and knew from a young age that there’s more to life than struggling for necessities. At 16, he decided to start working; he said the main reason was, “My parents don’t have to pay for my food or my clothes anymore.”
When he got older, the military became his escape and salvation. He found structure and stability for nine years, but life continued to test him. His father’s death three years ago left a deep wound, with his younger brother now carrying the weight of caring for their grieving mother.
After the military, William worked tirelessly – in plumbing, security, and a hospital during the terrifying COVID-19 pandemic. Each job was an attempt to find the stability he once had.
As time progressed, William states, “I was burnt out,” and he ended up quitting his plumbing job at that time.
His journey to Tucson began with helping a friend “Stay positive” through court issues while trying to find his own path. William found himself facing homelessness after the job he had in Tucson no longer needed him.
Desperate to find a safe place to stay, a miracle happened, and that was being referred to Gospel Rescue Mission by a guest who was once at GRM for the recovery program.
Arriving in February, William found more than just a shelter. He saw “a better grasp of who God is.” The Christian-based organization became his sanctuary, offering a bed and a chance at redemption.
At GRM, he discovered a purpose in helping other veterans who were fighting similar battles, and that’s what he is doing today, guiding others while also exploring workforce opportunities through GRM.
Despite losing his job, facing homelessness, and experiencing personal tragedies, William’s spirit remained unbroken.
His message to anyone experiencing homelessness is, “If anybody’s out there that needs that help and just wonders, you’re gonna have to take a chance somewhere. I can’t think of a better place to come to than Gospel Rescue Mission.
