Center of Opportunity

Collaborating to Create Hope

I want to give dignity to these people. Some are treated worse than animals. I want to give them a nice place to go where they will have access to all the services they need to get back on their feet and reintegrate with society under one roof.

— Humberto Lopez

At the Center of Opportunity (COOP), we believe no one should face homelessness alone. COOP is a hub of collaborative care, where partners, providers, and community members come together to help individuals move from crisis to stability. Our vision is a holistic, partner-based ecosystem — where advocacy, coaching, and compassion intersect to transform lives.

Our Approach

Collaboration That Creates Pathways Forward
Through a coordinated, guest-centered model, our approach brings essential services together in one place—removing barriers and creating clear pathways toward stability and independence. By aligning housing, healthcare, workforce development, and education, we meet individuals where they are and walk alongside them as they move from crisis to healing, purpose, and lasting self-sufficiency.

EMERGENCY SHELTER & Housing

Safe, stable housing options that help guests transition from emergency shelter to long-term independence.

Healthcare & Wellness

On-site medical and behavioral health services that address physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Workforce development

Career coaching, job readiness training, and employment pathways that empower individuals to rebuild their future.

Education & Support Resources

Life skills classes, recovery programs, and personalized coaching to sustain growth and self-sufficiency.

How It All Began

When Faith, Vision, and Purpose Aligned

A conversation rooted in faith, vision, and compassion. In this interview, Humberto Lopez and Lisa Chastain share the story behind the H.S. Lopez Family Foundation Center of Opportunity and Gospel Rescue Mission—how a shared calling sparked a partnership, and how that vision has grown into a place of hope for Tucson.

Together, they reflect on the significance of this work for the broader community and for the men, women, and families moving from crisis toward dignity, healing, and lasting life transformation.

Hope for the Hopeless

Where Two Visions Became One Mission

In 2018, the H.S. Lopez Family Foundation purchased the former Holiday Inn Holidome with a bold vision: to create a one-stop refuge of hope providing holistic support for guests on their journey out of homelessness.

This 150,000-square-foot property in a non-residential zone offers room to expand services, including on-site medical and dental facilities. Highlights include:

8,900 sq. ft. ballroom
Transformed into an emergency shelter bed area.
51 renovated suites
Now provide emergency shelter for women and children, long-term shelter for men in addiction recovery, and housing for other underserved populations.
Hotel tower
Designated for low-income permanent housing through La Frontera Arizona.
