Marco’s story doesn’t begin at Gospel Rescue Mission. It begins in Arizona, with a childhood spent moving between Arizona and California and being raised by two important women in his life: his mother and his aunt.

His mom was “a great woman,” Marco says, and she was always there for him. Still, the two “always kind of butted heads,” and eventually, his aunt stepped in to help raise him. When his aunt took him to California, Marco quickly graduated. Afterward, he returned to Tucson and began building a life of his own.

He found work in law enforcement with the Department of Corrections and even volunteered with the sheriff. There was purpose. There was structure. And for Marco, it felt like the beginning of the life he was supposed to live.

Searching for Stability

Then came marriage and the birth of his son. Marco continued working, but life at home became increasingly painful. “Unfortunately, my ex-wife and I had some problems,” he recalls. He tried giving her time and space, hoping things would heal, but they never fully did. Eventually, Marco stepped completely into his role as a father. After gaining custody of his son, the two moved to Delaware, Ohio.

For a time, it seemed as though they had finally found stability. But life can change in a moment.

The Day Everything Changed

During a trip back to Arizona, Marco experienced something terrifying. “I basically ended up getting kind of carjacked,” he says. “This guy asked me for some money, and then I turned around. Next thing you know, I’m hit.”

The attack left Marco with a severe concussion and a fractured face. He spent about a week and a half in the hospital. But his health struggles weren’t over. Bronchitis sent him back to the hospital. When he still didn’t feel right, he returned again. This time, doctors found double pneumonia.

The physical pain was taking its toll, but beneath the surface, Marco realized he was struggling in another way, too.“I realized I was going through stuff mentally, so I started drinking a little bit,” he admits.

The life Marco had worked to build suddenly felt much more uncertain. Then a friend called

An Invitation to Find Help

The friend was calling from Gospel Rescue Mission. “I heard it’s really good there,” Marco remembers hearing. It was a simple conversation, but it pointed Marco toward a place that would become an important part of his journey. What Marco found at Gospel Rescue Mission wasn’t perfection. It was peace. “The first night I stayed there, I slept really good,” he says.

For someone who had been carrying physical pain, emotional struggles, and uncertainty, a good night’s sleep meant something. He felt safe. And he saw an opportunity.

“This Is My Chance”

From the beginning, Marco took his time at Gospel Rescue Mission seriously.

When the classes and checklists were laid out before him, he didn’t drag his feet. He made a decision to engage in the process. “I got really, like, I took it really serious,” he says. “I was like, you know what? This is my chance. They’re helping me. This is my chance to help myself.”

Marco began moving forward, one step at a time. Along the way, one thing stood out to him: the people. He saw staff members who didn’t simply do their jobs but were willing to go “a little extra mile.”

“Everyone there was great,” Marco says. He noticed that care in places others might overlook—even in the kitchen. To Marco, those small moments mattered. They were reminders that someone cared and that he wasn’t walking through this season completely alone.

Seeing Others Differently

Over roughly a month and two weeks at Gospel Rescue Mission, something began to shift in Marco. It wasn’t only his circumstances. It was his heart. Marco says he has never been someone who judged others harshly, but his experience at GRM made him “that much more nonjudgmental.” He met men from different backgrounds and different walks of life. Their stories taught him that struggle doesn’t always look the same.

A person can be living paycheck to paycheck and on the edge of homelessness. Another can come from “a higher-end lifestyle.” Both can find themselves in need. Both can need help. Both can need grace and a place to land.

Learning to Dig Deep

As Marco learned more about the people around him, he also discovered something about himself. GRM helped him see his own strength. “It’s taught me how much stronger I am,” he reflects. “I didn’t know I could push through it, and I would kind of give up.” But this time was different. This time, Marco didn’t run.

“This showed me that I can push through it,” he says. “It just kind of showed me how to dig deep and push through a problem.” After everything he had experienced—the pain, uncertainty, health struggles, and emotional weight—Marco was learning that difficult moments did not have to be the end of his story. He could keep going.

Something Spiritual

Perhaps the deepest change Marco experienced was in his relationship with God.

“It was just like something spiritual about being there,” he says. “You felt safe.”

For Marco, Gospel Rescue Mission became more than a temporary place to stay. It became a place where he could experience peace, reflect on his life, and recognize the quiet ways God was working through the people around him. Sometimes, hope arrives through a conversation. Sometimes, it looks like a safe place to sleep. Sometimes, it is found in people willing to go the extra mile.

For Marco, those moments became part of something much bigger.

Standing in a Different Place

Today, Marco stands in a different place than the man who arrived at 4:30 in the morning—exhausted, hurting, and unsure of what came next. He is working. He is pursuing a second job. He is becoming more independent and more confident in who he is. And if he could speak directly to someone who is afraid to ask for help, Marco’s message is simple:

“Gospel Rescue is for anyone.” Marco knows difficult days may come again. But now, he knows he doesn’t have to face them the same way. “I definitely will not hesitate to ask for help again,” he shares. “But this time, I’ve learned a lot of resources—just different things that I can, like I said, push through it.”

Marco’s journey has been marked by trials and tribulations, but those trials are not the only part of his story. His is also a story of grace. Of second chances. Of discovering strength, he didn’t know he had. And of the quiet, powerful work of God through people who chose to care, to walk the extra mile, and to offer a safe place to land.

Marco came to Gospel Rescue Mission carrying pain and uncertainty. Today, he moves forward with greater strength, deeper faith, and the knowledge that asking for help can be the first step toward discovering just how much you are capable of overcoming.
