The Power of the Tongue
Have you ever noticed that sometimes, when you’re having a conversation with someone, you suddenly become angry and don’t know why? Or are there other times when you walk away from a conversation feeling such peace and joy?
The words we speak and the tone in which we speak them can change the entire atmosphere. Even when things are tense between two people, the words we choose can either bring life and peace or add to the tension.
Proverbs 15:1-4 1
1 A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger.
2 The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly,
But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness.
3 The eyes of the LORD are in every place,
Keeping watch on the evil and the good.
4 A wholesome tongue is a tree of life,
But perverseness in it breaks the spirit.
When we respond with kindness and a gentle tone, we can help diffuse anger and prevent a situation from escalating.
We’ve all heard the saying, “Think before you speak.” It is so true!
If we take a moment to carefully consider our words before speaking, we can have more meaningful and productive conversations.
“A wholesome tongue is a tree of life.”
Think about that for a moment. When we speak negatively, tear others down with our words, or use profanity, we can leave people feeling unworthy, discouraged, and less than they are.
But when we speak words that are positive, encouraging, and uplifting, we bring life to others. We help them feel valued, encouraged, and seen.
Our words have power. They can build people up or tear them down. They can bring peace or stir up anger. They can encourage a weary heart or leave someone feeling defeated.
So, take a moment to think about what comes out of your mouth and the tone in which you express yourself.
Does your speech give people a breath of fresh air, or does it leave them feeling defeated and exasperated?
Remember, the power of the tongue is not just in the words we speak but also in how we speak them. Let your words be a source of life, encouragement, and peace to those around you.
