Preparing the Soil of Our Hearts

As we draw closer to Thanksgiving, we are cultivating a thankful heart.

When you think about cultivating a garden, you know it takes preparation. It takes digging up the weeds and removing the rocky soil.

We have to nourish and prepare the soil so it can produce good crops.

It is the same with the soil of our heart. Many of us have weeds and rocks of negative attitudes, of grumbling and complaining, and of seeing the worst in things.

In order to cultivate a thankful heart, we need to replace those things with gratitude and sow the Word of life into our heart.

Colossians 2:6–7 (CSB)
“So then, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to walk in him, being rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, and overflowing with gratitude.”

We are able to overflow with gratitude the more we root ourselves in the Word. Today let’s echo the psalmist in Psalm 139:23 (CSB):
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.”

This week, be intentional about finding things to be thankful for. I encourage you to write them down and speak them out daily.

As we practice gratitude, we will find that our heart becomes more pliable and grateful.
