From Brokenness to Hope

Melinda & Justin
Recovery Guest
Melinda never imagined her life would unfold this way.
She was born to a mother trapped in addiction and later adopted by a woman who had everything she thought would mean safety—money, a home, stability. From the outside, it looked like a dream come true. But what Melinda needed most—the gentle, unconditional love of a mother—was missing.
Still, Melinda pushed forward. She worked hard. She kept a home. She had a car. She was doing everything she knew to do for herself and her children. Then, in a moment that shattered everything, she lost her kids to CPS.
In the darkest season of her life—when hope felt distant and the future uncertain—God brought someone into her story.
Justin knew pain well. He grew up with a mother who was emotionally absent, never there when he needed her most—not even when he ended up in jail. By then, the path he thought was set for him felt unavoidable. He became a drug dealer because that was all he had ever seen. It was the life he believed he was destined to live.
Through a series of broken and beautiful moments, Melinda and Justin found one another. Together, they began to realize there was something more than just surviving—something deeper than simply getting by.
That’s when God led them to Gospel Rescue Mission.
At GRM, they found more than food and shelter. They found a community that believed in them—people who saw not just their past, but their potential. Through teaching, counseling, and the truth of the Gospel, they began learning how to love in ways they had never known.
Melinda shares, “If we hadn’t found the gospel, I probably wouldn’t be able to keep my kids right now.”
GRM gave them tools to face their pain in healthy ways and to rebuild trust, communication, and hope. Justin says, “I learned that communication is everything. I learned to say, ‘I’m not mad at you—I’m just mad right now.’”
Together, they confronted lies, judgment, homelessness, and separation. But they refused to give up.
“Communication really is the key,” Melinda says. “Talk things through. Don’t let hurt sit and grow.”
And Justin adds, “Don’t give up. No matter what. I don’t care—I don’t give up.”
Gospel Rescue Mission wasn’t just a place where Melinda and Justin found help—it was where they found hope, healing, and a new foundation for their future. It was the place where brokenness gave way to restoration, and survival turned into transformation.
