From Hopelessness to Hope in Christ

Life felt like a rollercoaster of pain and struggle for Lionel. From a young age, he battled demons that seemed impossible to overcome. Drugs became his escape—marijuana, cocaine, alcohol—all ways to numb the hurt. Growing up with a working mother who was struggling herself, Lionel often felt lost and alone.

But God had a different plan.

Years of addiction, cancer, chronic health issues, homelessness, and hopelessness left Lionel at rock bottom. He thought there was no way out—until something miraculous happened.

Gospel Rescue Mission became his lifeline.

“When I first arrived,” Lionel recalls, “I was scared, tired, and honestly, I didn’t have much hope left. But something felt different here. The people here, they actually listen. They actually try to help you. They give you tools to get your life together.”

Through GRM’s recovery program, Lionel encountered the power of faith. He began reading the Bible and discovered God’s deep love for him. On April 3rd, he was baptized—a life-changing moment that even moved his sister to tears when she heard the news.

For the first time, Jesus became real to Lionel. The anxiety that once consumed him started to fade. His laughter returned. He found joy in helping others. The drugs that once controlled his life lost their grip.

With new confidence, Lionel focused on building a future. He learned job skills, took construction classes offered at GRM, and, most importantly, became a role model for his children and grandchildren.

Today, Lionel’s story is a testimony of transformation.

“There’s always hope,” he says. “No matter how far you’ve fallen, God can lift you up. Gospel Rescue Mission didn’t just change my circumstances—they helped change my heart. You have to be willing to change. It’s not easy, but it’s possible. I recommend it to anybody having issues—come and try it out.”
