From Saving Lives to Finding Hope Again

In the quiet suburbs of New Jersey, Mark’s mixed-race family endured terrible racism—at one point, a cross was burned on their lawn. But instead of being crushed by hatred, they stood firm, trusting in a God whose love is stronger than any darkness.

A year later, something extraordinary happened. The very same community that once tried to intimidate them honored Mark’s family as “Family of the Year.” It was Mark’s first life-changing lesson: God’s love always triumphs over hate.

Mark’s father, an ambitious college administrator, later moved the family from New Jersey to Baltimore, then on to Seattle. In Seattle, Mark discovered his calling—firefighting. For 17 incredible years, he rescued lives, delivered a baby, and faced down flames with courage. He loved every moment of serving, of being part of something bigger than himself.

But then life took an unexpected turn. An injury ended the career he loved, and little by little, homelessness crept in—first living in his car, then relying on the kindness of friends.

It was a friend who finally told him about Gospel Rescue Mission. Mark made the call—and found a place that felt like more than just shelter.

“This place really helps center a person,” he says. “It’s like you’re going to a Holiday Inn—people here genuinely care and guide you toward a better future.”

Mark stays remarkably positive. “God’s been there. He’s helped me. He’s taking care of me,” he says with conviction. Now actively involved in Mission programs and applying for housing, he’s moving forward with hope.

His advice to anyone willing to listen:
“If you give your heart, mind, and soul to God, He will help.”
