From Survival on the Streets to Redemption Through Faith

Jose
Recovery Guest
Raised by a loving mother and surrounded by a large family, Jose’s early life was marked by both love and hardship.
Growing up in his grandfather’s house, Jose found comfort in sports, becoming a Little League World Series participant at just 12 years old.
But tragedy struck that same year, he lost his older cousin and grandfather – two pillars of strength that had guided his young life. Their sudden absence created a void that would affect him for years. With no “father figure” for Jose to turn to, he turned to the streets and bad influences for guidance.
As he got older, he stated, “I was just always involved in criminal activities, trying to make $2 out of 15 cents so I can feed my sisters and stuff.”
“I always found it much easier to sling drugs or do some kind of other way of coming up… I was always thinking cloudy, always in a cloud of smoke or something.”
His relationship with drugs wasn’t just about addiction, it was about survival. After being shot, brought to the hospital, and then released, they sent him away without proper pain management, causing him to turn to fentanyl.
He explained “I ended up using something I was totally against.”
After years and years of this type of lifestyle, the turning point came with the loss of his mother.
“My mom was everything to me.”
Her death became the motivation for his transformation, pushing him towards a path of sobriety and redemption.
Coming to Gospel Rescue Mission on January 2nd, he found that it was more than a program – it was a spiritual rebirth. His faith, once distant, became his lifeline.
Jose mentions, “I’ve always known God was working miracles in my life, but now I truly understand what that means.”
His transformation wasn’t just personal – it extended to his family. They became witnesses to his remarkable journey of redemption.
Today, Jose stands as a beacon of hope. Clean for almost seven months, baptized, and working in the Workforce Program, he embodies the power of faith and personal transformation.
