From the Streets to a Life Guided by Faith

Alonzo
Recovery Guest
By age 12, the streets began calling, and he started down a dangerous path.
Dropping out of school around eighth grade, Alonzo sank deeper into a world of struggle. Homelessness became his reality at 18, marking a decade-long journey of pain, addiction, and lost hope.
The streets were unforgiving, and Alonzo felt trapped in a cycle of despair.
But God had a different plan.
While in prison, something miraculous happened. During a moment of desperate prayer, Alonzo experienced a spiritual awakening. “I was praying and praying, and I heard a voice in the back of my mind,” he recalls. It was God’s voice, telling him he wasn’t finished—that his nephews needed him, and that his life had purpose.
When Alonzo arrived at Gospel Rescue Mission (GRM), everything changed. The Christian environment, the supportive people, and the programs were unlike anything he had experienced before.
“GRM is a good place,” he says. “They gave me resources like this recovery place, housing, workforce programs, and that’s why I’m willing to be here and finish this program. That’s what I want to do.”
For the first time, Alonzo felt hope. He got baptized, recommitted to his faith, and began the journey of healing.
Today, Alonzo is rebuilding his life. He’s learning to manage his emotions, identify triggers, and make amends. His relationship with his father is healing, and he is committed to being a positive role model for his nephews.
“God never gives up, and neither should you,” he says.
One day at a time, with faith as his compass, Alonzo is transforming his life.
