Guard Your Heart

Proverbs 4:20–27
20 My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words.
21 Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart,
22 for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body.
23 Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
24 Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech.
25 Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you.
26 Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path.
27 Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.

Have you ever been around certain people or in certain situations—or simply watched a movie—and found yourself acting a whole lot differently?

Have you ever thought about the things you put into your heart and what they produce in your life?

Proverbs tells us to guard our hearts above all else, for they determine the course of our lives. What we watch, what we listen to, and what we allow into our hearts will eventually come out in our lives.

If we are putting the Word of God into our hearts, it will produce positive results. If we are surrounding ourselves with uplifting and positive people, that influence will affect the way we behave. If all we ever hear is negativity, cursing, and words from people who bring us down, we will begin to emulate those things.

The more we guard our hearts and allow the things of God to penetrate deeply, the more we will find our lives moving in a positive direction. When we find ourselves continually straying or saying things that contradict God’s best for us, it is time to examine our hearts and see if there might be an area where we have let our guard down.
