A Quiet Yes That Changed History

As we continue to look forward to Christmas, let’s take a look at Joseph.

While Mary and Joseph were engaged, Mary discovered that—though still a virgin—she was pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. We can only imagine the thoughts racing through Joseph’s mind when he heard the news.

In their culture, this was a major NO. According to the law, Joseph had every right to have Mary stoned. Matthew 1:19 says, “Joseph, her fiancé, was a good man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly.”

Joseph was a carpenter. His business would be ruined if word got out. He was known as a righteous and faithful man. What would people think?

As Joseph wrestled with what to do—trying to do the right thing but not sure what that was—an angel appeared to him in a dream and said:
“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. She will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
(Matthew 1:20–21)

I can only imagine the turmoil in Joseph’s heart. It would’ve been so much easier to walk away, to protect his reputation, and keep his place in the community. But the Lord was asking him to do something completely contrary to the norm.

And Joseph obeyed.

Verse 24 tells us, “When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife.”

Think about that—Joseph obeyed without knowing how it would all work out. He didn’t have all the details. He just trusted God. And through that one moment of obedience, history was changed. Jesus was born.
