Patrick’s Story of Loss, Faith, and Renewed Hope

Patrick moved frequently growing up but managed to graduate from high school. He dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. But after graduation, he decided to take a year off. That “gap year” became permanent. He stayed home, worked, and spent time partying—slowly drifting away from the future he once envisioned.
After moving out, Patrick fell in with a crowd that introduced him to drugs. At first, he was able to keep working, but addiction eventually took hold and destabilized his life. “I lost everything.” Concerned for his safety, his mother urged him to move to Arizona, where his brother and sister were living. But even then, relationships were strained. After a short time, Patrick left and found himself experiencing homelessness.
From 2013–2014 through 2023, Patrick lived in a cycle of on-and-off homelessness, addiction, short-term jobs, shelters, and a halfway house. There were moments of stability—at one point, he was living in his own apartment, working as a behavioral health technician and phlebotomist, and had earned his certification. But when he reconnected with people from his past, he relapsed, losing his apartment, his car, and even the dog and cat he loved.
Then came a turning point.
Patrick received a call from his ex, who was at Gospel Rescue Mission (GRM), urging him to leave Phoenix and come to Tucson.
At first, Patrick didn’t even realize GRM was a homeless shelter. “There’s nothing but opportunity here,” he shared. Instead of just a place to stay, he found something more—classes focused on emotional intelligence and personal growth that helped him understand his patterns and begin to heal. GRM also helped him rebuild the basics—his ID, birth certificate, Social Security card, and health insurance—things that are often lost when life unravels.
Today, Patrick is rebuilding his life, gaining new skills, strengthening his sense of self, and moving forward with a hopeful vision for his future.
