Meeting People Where They Are

What’s missing in so many approaches isn’t more funding—it’s the power of God to bring true healing and lasting transformation.
Across the country, hundreds of millions of government dollars are poured into homelessness and recovery programs each year—yet more lives continue to unravel. In New York City alone, $81,705 was spent for each unsheltered homeless person in 2025… and homelessness still rose 26%.
We are seeing the same heartbreaking pattern right here in Tucson. More money is spent—but people remain stuck. And while that kind of waste is frustrating, what grieves me most is the lives that are lost each and every day.
At Gospel Rescue Mission, we meet men and women every day who have learned to survive within that system, spending years—sometimes decades—cycling through shelters, programs, and temporary fixes. Trauma, guilt, and shame leave people deeply broken in ways no program alone can fully heal.
But what’s missing in so many recovery and homelessness programs is the most important thing: God.
When they encounter the love and forgiveness of God, that’s when they experience healing and wholeness—mind, body, and spirit. That’s when we witness the miracle of transformation.
Transformation requires more than a place to stay for a few nights. It takes time, care, and a community committed to walking alongside someone for their entire journey to wholeness.
None of this work would be possible without you—our donors, volunteers, and prayer partners. Your willingness to invest comes from seeing the pain and suffering in our community, and choosing to be part of the rescue and healing.
I can’t thank you enough for partnering with us to do the hard work that goes beyond offering a meal or providing shelter for a few weeks. Your investment in transformation does not go unnoticed!
Thanking God for You,

Lisa Chastain
