From Addiction to Redemption

PATRICK’s Story

For nearly ten years, Patrick lived in what felt like an endless cycle of addiction, homelessness, shelters, and temporary jobs. As the years passed, hope slowly faded, and the future he once imagined became harder and harder to see.

I thought you just showed up to work, did your job, and went home. No one ever taught me emotional intelligence like how to communicate with coworkers, receive feedback, or handle conflict.

Everything changed when someone he trusted encouraged him to come to Gospel Rescue Mission.

Patrick expected another shelter—a place to sleep, a meal to eat, and eventually a reminder to move on. Instead, he found people committed to helping him rebuild every part of his life.

“I didn’t even realize it was a homeless shelter,” Patrick recalls.

He was suddenly surrounded by people dedicated to helping him with everything—big and small—like replacing his identification, and legal documents he’d lost over the years. They connected him with medical and dental care, housing resources, and he enrolled in Workforce Development.

Patrick thought Workforce would teach him how to find a job. Instead, it taught him how to build a life.

Those lessons became the foundation for everything that followed.

After completing Workforce Development, Patrick enrolled in our Culinary program, earning college credit while developing professional kitchen skills. He later joined the six-month Manager-in-Training internship at Opportunity Coffee & Cafe, where he learned business operations, leadership, customer service, and what it means to invest in others.

More importantly, Patrick found people who looked beyond his immediate needs and helped him believe his future could be different.

Today, he serves as an intern, but will be a hired full time

Assistant Manager by the end of August at Opportunity Coffee & Cafe, where he’s continuing to develop the skills, confidence, and experience to pursue the life God has planned for him.

JACKIE’s Story

If you’ve visited the Opportunity Coffee & Cafe, chances are you’ve met Jackie.

You might see her engaging with guests, training new interns, or welcoming new customers with a big smile on her face.
Not long ago, however, Jackie was the one searching for a second chance.

You may slip and fall, and that’s okay—we’re here to catch you

After abuse and addiction led her to homelessness, Jackie came to GRM carrying the weight of years of trauma, loss, and regret. Sobriety gave her hope and Workforce Development gave her direction, but managing the Opportunity Coffee & Cafe allowed her to use every part of her story to encourage others.

People walk through the doors of the cafe carrying the same fear and uncertainty Jackie once carried herself. They wonder if they’ll ever rebuild their lives, or find lasting purpose.

Jackie understands because she’s been there.

“I can honestly look people in the eyes and say, ‘I know what you’re going through.”

That shared experience has become one of her greatest strengths as a leader, and it fuels her passion. Each day she trains new employees, encourages new interns, and helps others discover gifts they didn’t know they had.

Helping someone else believe they have a future has given Jackie a renewed sense of purpose. Every conversation, every lesson, and every encouraging word is a reminder that God can redeem even the hardest chapters of our lives, and use them to help someone else become whole again.
