Press Release: Operation Rescue From the Cold

TUCSON, Ariz., December 1, 2025 — With overnight temperatures expected to plunge soon across Tucson, Gospel Rescue Mission (GRM) will activate Operation Rescue from the Cold beginning Monday, December 1, to provide life-saving refuge for men and women experiencing homelessness.

Even in the desert, winter conditions can be dangerous. When cold rain and near-freezing overnight lows combine, those without shelter face a heightened risk of illness, hypothermia, and weather-related emergencies.

Anyone experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity is encouraged to come.

“Cold weather is silent but dangerous,” stated Lisa Chastain, CEO of Gospel Rescue Mission. “This is an invitation for relief from the elements, but it is also an invitation to who we are and what we do. People hear “shelter” and picture cold floors and stern people. Then they walk into our doors and feel something different: Love that doesn’t judge, Grace that doesn’t lecture, Dignity that isn’t earned – it’s given, and Respect that says – you matter. We want people to know that there is nothing to be afraid of here – except maybe the moment you realize how powerful a second chance really feels.”

Services Provided Through Operation Rescue from the Cold:

From 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily, guests will receive:

  • A warm, safe indoor environment with access to common areas
  • Hot showers, hygiene items, and laundry facilities
  • Dry clothing, socks, jackets, and blankets for those in need
  • Nutritious lunch and dinner served alongside GRM’s residential guests
  • Day beds for rest and recovery
  • Activities that restore dignity, such as books, games, and community spaces
  • On-site staff and volunteers available to assist with intake, recovery programs, case management, and housing options

This initiative mirrors GRM’s summer outreach, Operation Rescue from the Heat, which saw thousands of individuals access safety, nutrition, and deeper support programs. Now, the focus shifts to protecting lives during winter weather—while continuing GRM’s mission of welcoming people into long-term solutions.
