Chasing Carrots or Pursuing Purpose

We are a couple of weeks into the New Year, and our minds are still focused on goals and the things we want to accomplish this year. One thing we need to caution ourselves about is “chasing carrots.”

It is easy to get caught up in chasing things that get us off track—the next shiny thing, a new fad, or a whim that draws our attention away from the purposes and goals God has placed in our hearts.

So we pause and ask:
What is bringing us fulfillment? Is it temporary or eternal?

Is what we are seeking ultimately about God and His desires, or is it all about us?

Fame and fortune bring temporary satisfaction but will leave us lacking. Yet so many of us believe money is the solution to life’s problems.

There is nothing wrong with having money or possessions, but when chasing money becomes our primary objective, we need to check our motives.

1 Timothy 6:17–19
“Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.”

If money is the carrot you are chasing, it will never bring satisfaction.

If you don’t have money, you are constantly looking for ways to get some.

If you do have money, you are constantly trying to get more. When we view money as a tool God has given us to do good, we can trust Him to provide what we need—and we grow content and grateful for what we already have.
